Zootopia is a different movie from the rest of featured films with animated, talking, walking and clothed animals. I went to see this movie with my daughter without really knowing that I would be so impressed with the messages conveyed by each of the 2 main characters of Zootopia. As with any of Disney movies, you know it is going to be good, well done, entertaining, cute, and undoubtedly signed by its magical stamp, but what I did not expect were these 7 powerful messages that children can easily understand:
- Your dreams as far-fetched as they may seem to be are achievable with the right mindset, self-discipline and self-motivation.
- You can make a difference in the world as long as you stick to your dreams and aspirations.
- You can be more than the stereotypical labels you grow up with.
- You can be whoever you want to be.
- You can can form powerful alliances if you look beyond stereotypes and apparent differences.
- Determination, courage, tolerance and hard work will not allow you to succumb to disillusionment when things and people are not what they seemed to be, “get yourself back up and fight for what you believe.”
- Wrongdoing has consequences.
The film has a powerful message for parents as well. In the movie, Judy Hopps’ dreams were underestimated by her own parents. Judy’s parents lived the conventional “lifestyle” of bunnies and would consistently tell Judy to forget about being a cop in Zootopia because bunnies are meant to be carrot-growers far from the city. In part, because this is a movie, Judy went ahead with little hesitation and proved them wrong. However, in real life, most kids will probably hold back, put their dreams aside and not follow their heart. It is a great message for parents to not disregard or undervalue their children’s dreams because whether they follow them or not, at least, they know they always had their parent’s support, which contribute enormoulsy in making them self-confident kids.
At the end, the morale of the story is that it pays off to fight for what you believe is right and yours, as Judy Hopp and Nick , the fox, showed that by doing so they were able to make a difference in Zootopia by restoring safety, eliminating some corrupted big-wig animals, as they cracked a major case involving the mysterious disappearance of some carnivorous citizens.
I must say that there were a few scary and violent scenes that frightened my daughter, but other than that, Zootopia is a must-see movie for the whole family. You will certainly enjoy the singing Gazette, the glitzy, sexy giraffe, voiced by Shakira.
